What is Lifeguarding Certification?
Most people are familiar with CPR and First Aid certification programs. These are basic, foundational certifications that are required – or strongly recommended – for a wide range of professionals, from lifeguards and daycare providers to police officers and medical health professionals.
It should be no surprise then when you go to apply for one of these jobs – specifically one that involves water safety, such as lifeguarding- very specific training and certification are requirements are necessary before even applying in most cases.
Lifeguarding Certification typically covers:
- CPR administration for Adult, Child and Infant victims
- Basic First Aid administration
- Prevention and prompt recognition of aquatic emergencies
- Providing care for Breathing and Cardiac medical emergencies
- General water and poolside safety protocols
This course encompasses traditional CPR but with a definite shift in focus to things like:
- CPR in a wet poolside environments.
- Improvement of chest compression to breath ratios.
- Realistic scenarios, simulations, and animations depicting rescuers, teams, and patients
- CPR when administered as a team, which is touched on in basic CPR but requires more emphasis for First Responders such as lifeguards.
- AED instruction.
- Additional medical support information such as administering oxygen masks
What is Water Safety and Proficiency?
Water Safety is for anybody who wants to know more about safe recreational use of natural bodies of water, safe use of pools, general recognition of aquatic emergencies, and how to prevent- and if necessary, respond- to such emergencies.
Water Proficiency courses generally are Swim courses, which often are categorized by age and experience level, for example Adult, and Child Swim Lessons.
Who can take these Certification Courses?
Because Lifeguard Certification places an emphasis on high quality, team-based CPR in fast paced settings, and involves techniques requiring a certain amount of physical ability, Lifeguard Certification course participants must be at least 15 years of age.
Classroom based general Water Safety Courses can be taken by just about anyone wanting to gain knowledge regarding skills and safe practices for use of water. Ideal for foster and adoptive parents, families, babysitters, daycare and preschool staff, teachers, camp counselors, and many more.
